Part 5 \u2013 Why does the Bible consist of so many different types of books?<\/h2>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

Why is the Bible so varied?<\/h4>\n\n

Have you ever noticed how different the books in the Bible are?<\/p>\n\n

In Genesis, you read about creation.<\/p>\n\n

In the Psalms, you encounter songs and prayers.<\/p>\n\n

The Gospels tell the story of the life of Jesus.<\/p>\n\n

Revelation is full of impressive images and symbols.<\/p>\n\n

Why did God do it that way?<\/p>\n\n

Because He knew that people learn in different ways. Sometimes through stories, sometimes through poems, sometimes through history, and sometimes through images that make you think. <\/p>\n\n

It is precisely this variety that makes the Bible so special.<\/p>\n\n

The Bible is a library<\/h4>\n\n

The Bible is not one single book, but a collection of 66 books.<\/p>\n\n

Each book has its own purpose, its own style, and its own message.<\/p>\n\n

Yet together they form a single whole.<\/p>\n\n

Paul writes: “All Scripture is God-breathed…”<\/em> (2 Timothy 3:16)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

So that applies to all books, even though they differ greatly from one another.<\/p>\n\n

History tells what happened<\/h4>\n\n

Many Bible books describe real events.<\/p>\n\n

Think of Genesis, Exodus, Joshua, Samuel, or Acts.<\/p>\n\n

There you read how God worked in the lives of ordinary people.<\/p>\n\n

Paul says about this: “Now all these things happened to them as examples for us…”<\/em> (1 Corinthians 10:11)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

God had these histories written down so that we can learn from them.<\/p>\n\n

Not everything that happens in a history is automatically an example to follow.<\/p>\n\n

Sometimes the Bible actually shows the consequences of wrong choices.<\/p>\n\n

Poetry speaks to the heart<\/h4>\n\n

Books such as Psalms, Proverbs, and Song of Solomon are written differently.<\/p>\n\n

They use imagery.<\/p>\n\n

When David writes: “The LORD is my Shepherd…”<\/em> (Psalm 23:1)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

he obviously doesn’t mean that God is literally a shepherd of sheep.<\/p>\n\n

He uses an image to make God’s loving care clear.<\/p>\n\n

Poetry doesn’t just want to appeal to your mind, but also to your heart.<\/p>\n\n

Parables make you think<\/h4>\n\n

Jesus often told parables.<\/p>\n\n

These are short stories with a deep lesson.<\/p>\n\n

His disciples asked Him why.<\/p>\n\n

Jesus answered: “I speak to them in parables…”<\/em> (Matthew 13:13)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

A parable is not a true story, but a comparison that makes a spiritual truth clear.<\/p>\n\n

That’s why you shouldn’t explain every little detail literally.<\/p>\n\n

By doing so, you actually miss the main message.<\/p>\n\n

Prophecies look ahead<\/h4>\n\n

Books such as Daniel and Revelation contain many prophecies.<\/p>\n\n

Some are literal.<\/p>\n\n

Others contain symbols.<\/p>\n\n

For example, a beast doesn’t always mean a real animal.<\/p>\n\n

The Bible explains many of those symbols itself.<\/p>\n\n

For instance, we read: “Those great beasts… are four kings…”<\/em> (Daniel 7:17)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

And later: “The waters… are peoples, multitudes, nations, and languages.”<\/em> (Revelation 17:15)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

That shows how important it is not to invent symbols yourself, but to let the Bible speak.<\/p>\n\n

Letters are personal messages<\/h4>\n\n

A large part of the New Testament consists of letters.<\/p>\n\n

Paul, Peter, James, and John wrote to congregations that were struggling with very practical questions.<\/p>\n\n

That’s why it’s good to keep asking yourself:<\/p>\n\n

Why did this apostle write this?<\/p>\n\n

Who was this letter intended for?<\/p>\n\n

What situation was going on?<\/p>\n\n

That helps you to better understand and apply the message.<\/p>\n\n

One Author, many writers<\/h4>\n\n

Although the Bible was written by about forty people, there is ultimately one Author.<\/p>\n\n

Peter writes: “Holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.”<\/em> (2 Peter 1:21)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

God used different personalities, but His message remained the same.<\/p>\n\n

That makes the Bible unique.<\/p>\n\n

Summary<\/h4>\n\n

God has given different types of Bible books because each genre makes something different clear.<\/p>\n\n

History shows how God acts.<\/p>\n\n

Poetry touches the heart.<\/p>\n\n

Parables teach us to think.<\/p>\n\n

Prophecies show God’s plan.<\/p>\n\n

Letters help us apply faith practically.<\/p>\n\n

When you know what kind of text you are reading, you understand the Bible much better.<\/p>\n\n

Remember this<\/h4>\n\n

Always ask yourself: “What kind of Bible passage am I reading?” You don’t read a history, poem, parable, or prophecy all in the same way. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n
